AfDB launches a new 22.23 million USD project in South Sudan in response to the Sudan crisis

Funded by the African Development Bank with a total budget of $22.23 million, including $2.43M as a contribution from UNHCR, the two-year “Response to the Sudan Refugee Crisis on South Sudan” (SRCSSP) project, launched in March 2025 (implementation 2025-2026), is a collaborative effort between UNHCR and the Ministry of Interior (The Commission for Refugee Affairs- CRA), under the oversight of the Ministry of Finance and Planning. Currently, an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) is being conducted to assess the risks and ensure environmental and social sustainability of the project. Targeting Maban, Jamjang, Aweil, and Juba, the project aims to build peace, inclusion, and resilience in South Sudanese communities affected by the Sudan refugee crisis, primarily benefiting refugees and host communities. This is achieved through four components: enhancing livelihoods, restoring social services, environmental restoration, and project management/capacity building, all focused on integrating refugees and returnees, strengthening social cohesion, and improving socio-economic well-being. The AfDB launch mission took place in mid March 2025 and facilitated coordination between stakeholders.
