Joint EU-WFP-UNHCR High-Level Mission Visits Nexus Projects in Chad

From May 21 to 22, 2025, a joint field mission comprising representatives from the European Union (including the EU INTPA Head of Unit for West Africa), UNHCR and WFP visited several project sites in Kokorguine, Lira, Bredjing, and Farchana in eastern Chad. The mission aimed to assess the impact of EU-funded interventions on the ground, engage with stakeholders, and discuss the ongoing nexus strategy for Eastern Chad with UN and implementing partners. Key visits included water retention barriers in Kokorguine and Farchana, which are contributing significantly to groundwater recharge, improved access to potable water for settlement, erosion control, and the expansion of arable land. Local communities expressed support for replicating these structures in other settlements to strengthen agricultural productivity and environmental restoration.
The mission also visited irrigated market garden sites in Lira and Farchana, each spanning 5 hectares and equipped with solar-powered water infrastructure. Refugee and host community farmers shared that improved irrigation has boosted yields, enabling them to meet household needs and generate income from surplus sales. Additionally, the mission visited small-scale agro-processing businesses in the markets of Bredjing and Farchana, where refugee and host entrepreneurs have expanded operations from single oil presses to small enterprises employing up to 15 people. These developments underscore the success of integrated, sustainable approaches in humanitarian-development programming. A key recommendation from the mission is to replicate successful models of water infrastructure and inclusive market support across additional sites to support community resilience.
