KOICA and UNHCR Complete Field Monitoring Mission in South Sudan

From February 15 to 20, the Performance Monitoring Team of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) visited South Sudan and successfully completed a monitoring mission for a joint project with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This visit took place as part of the "From Vulnerability to Empowerment: Building Safe and Resilient Communities" project, which is being conducted in the East African region (South Sudan and Burundi) from 2024 to 2027. The core objective of this project is to strengthen the self-reliance and resilience of forcibly displaced persons and host communities amidst ongoing crises. On-site, the mission directly observed the process of 'emergency temporary shelters' evolving into more stable and long-term 'transitional shelters' from the support of KOICA. The mission also visited sites of self-reliance where refugees have formed youth and women's committees to lead peaceful coexistence with the host community. This provided an opportunity to see how the 'HDP Nexus (Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus)' approach, which links humanitarian assistance, development, and peace beyond simple emergency relief, is being practically implemented in the field.
