New Book Published - “War and Resilience: The Multifaceted Impacts of Sudan's Conflict and Pathways to Recovery”

In War and Resilience: The Multifaceted Impacts of Sudan’s Conflict and Pathways to Recovery, a new book published by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), leading researchers leverage a diverse range of data sources, historical analysis, and expert forecasting to assess the impacts of the conflict in Sudan. Since the war’s onset in April 2023, nearly 12 million people—one-fourth of Sudan’s population—have been displaced, an estimated 44,000–150,000 people have been killed, and more than 45 percent of the population faces food insecurity. Edited by Khalid Siddig, Oliver K. Kirui, and Paul Dorosh, the book draws on recent household and enterprise surveys, satellite and remote-sensing indicators, market price data, and economywide modeling to document impacts of the crisis, explain trends, and identify realistic entry points for stabilizing conditions and supporting recovery.

In four thematic sections, the book’s 15 chapters situate the current conflict within Sudan’s longer historical trajectory of political exclusion, regional marginalization, and recurrent cycles of military rule. The authors explain how these structural factors shaped the conditions that led to the 2023 war and influenced its progression and scale. The book also identifies areas where Sudan’s population has nonetheless shown remarkable resilience through social networks, remittances, informal support systems, and adaptation in both rural and urban settings. The book concludes with a discussion of recovery scenarios and suggestions for rebuilding key economic and social sectors.

The publication was officially launched on April 14, 2026, at IFPRI’s third Sudan Conflict Conference in Cairo, Egypt. The conference convened researchers, policymakers, development partners, and practitioners to examine the evolving impacts of Sudan’s conflict and advance evidence-based pathways for resilience, recovery, and policy action. The program featured new empirical findings, policy dialogue, and forward-looking discussions aimed at strengthening coordinated responses in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
