One Hundred Sudanese Refugee Lawyers Begin Training in Chadian Law for Professional Integration

In a step forward toward inclusion and professional integration, in July 2025 UNHCR and the Chadian Bar Association launched a six-month legal training programme for 100 Sudanese refugee lawyers and jurists in Eastern Chad. Funded by the Mastercard Foundation, the initiative aims to familiarize participants with Chadian law and judicial practice, enabling them to resume their legal careers and actively contribute to their host communities.

The programme builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in August 2024 between the Chadian Bar and UNHCR, which laid the groundwork for supporting the professional advancement of qualified refugees. Combining classroom learning with practical experience, the training includes legal theory, court observations, and mentorship by senior judges, prosecutors, and lawyers from N’Djamena and Abéché.

Participants came from refugee communities living in Abéché and 14 sites across Eastern Chad, including Adré, Arkoum, Allacha, Metche, Dougui, Treguine, Aboutengue, Farchana, Kerfi, Zabout, Djabal, Goz Amir, Oure Cassoni, Iridimi, and Touloum. Through this initiative, they will gain the legal tools and local knowledge needed to navigate the Chadian judicial system and access professional opportunities.

The programme stands as a testament to the resilience and potential of refugee professionals. It affirms their right to recognition and inclusion and reflects the broader goals of Chad’s asylum legislation and the National Response Plan for the Crisis in Eastern Chad 2025-2027, which prioritizes refugee self-reliance and socio-economic integration.
