Introducing Ura Settlement
In January 2024, the Regional President of Benishangul-Gumuz Region officially authorized the establishment of Ura Refugee Site by providing 350 hectares of land to host a maximum of 34,000 refugees. Akuda kebele, the village adjacent to the refugee site, is home to 3,500 host community members. As of 31 May 2026, some 14,581 individuals (5,140 households) have been relocated to the new site, where they receive integrated services, such as health, education and WASH.
Ura settlement sits 22 km from the regional capital of Assosa, 4 km from the town of Ura woreda and 1 km from the village of Akuda kebele. The land is owned by the Akuda Kebele Administration. An earth road leads to Akuda kebele, followed by an asphalt road to Assosa-Kurmuk. The Regional Government has indicated its willingness to provide an additional 200 hectares of land around the Ura settlement to promote the economic development of the area and economic inclusion of refugees.
