Abstract

A field mission led by the UN Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator was made to BenishangulGumuz region around July 2023. As a result of the regional level stakeholders’ consultation, the mission noted that currently agriculture and livelihoods programming in the region are very limited. Institutional and technical capacity of the government implementing institutions was not strong enough to deliver the required agrifood system services effectively and efficiently, due to various reasons. Further, the coordination mechanisms put in place are not strong particularly for the agriculture and food security sector.

In this respect, FAO was requested to assist the Regional Government and Development Partners to prepare an advocacy note for promoting agricultural and livelihood interventions in the region. The rapid scoping mission to Benishangul-Gumuz1 was, therefore, conducted with the aim of assessing the overall status of the agriculture and livelihoods in the region, identify possible agriculture and livelihood interventions to be taken forward for implementation to enhance positive agrifood system outcomes in the region including food and nutrition security.
