Introducing Ura Settlement
In January 2024, the Regional President of Benishangul-Gumuz Region officially authorized the establishment of Ura refugee settlement by providing 350 hectares of land to host a maximum of 34,000 refugees. Akuda kebele, the village adjacent to the refugee site, is home to 3,500 host community members. Since 18 June 2024, when the settlement was officially opened, more than 11,000 refugees have been relocated to Ura refugee site (February 2025).
Ura settlement sits 22 km from the regional capital of Assosa, 4 km from the town of Ura woreda and 1 km from the village of Akuda kebele. The land is owned by the Akuda Kebele Administration. An earth road leads to Akuda kebele, followed by an asphalt road to Assosa-Kurmuk. The Regional Government has indicated its willingness to provide an additional 200 hectares of land around the Ura settlement to promote the economic development of the area and economic inclusion of refugees.
