Launch of new UNHCR data product on Sudanese return from neighbouring countries

UNHCR released on 26 January 2026 a new CORE data product providing detailed information on Sudanese returns from neighbouring countries, including Egypt, Libya and South Sudan. An increasing number of displaced Sudanese are returning to and within Sudan, particularly to parts of the country where hostilities have subsided, with the intention to begin the process of rebuilding their lives after almost three years of conflict.  

As of January 2026, there are an estimated 3.4 million returnees in Sudan, including 2.7 million returned IDPs (IOM DTM Sudan) and 714,000 returnees from abroad (Government, UNHCR, IOM sources). Of these, 86% of the refugee returnees indicate their intention to go back to their areas of origin. UNHCR collected information on the key needs and protection priorities by state, indicating that financial assistance, access to food, water and health are top priorities. 

This CORE product will be regularly updated on the UNHCR Operational Data Portal for Sudan.
