CGIAR is a global research partnership for a food-secure future dedicated to transforming food, land, and water systems in a climate crisis. Two CGIAR centers, the Alliance of Bioversity & the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Water Management Institute, in partnership with UNHCR, are conducting research on agricultural development, natural resource management, and sustainable energy solutions for areas hosting internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, and returnees in selected sites in Sudan. This research will enable evidence-based programming for UNHCR, as well as other humanitarian and development actors.

The research focuses on three critical objectives to build resilience in forced displacement settings:

  1. Improve water and agriculture systems, including potential for (irrigated) agricultural production to enhance food security, reduce dependency on humanitarian aid, promote peaceful co-existence, and strengthen resilient livelihoods.
  2. Improve management of natural resources to limit environmental degradation, create job opportunities, and adapt to the effects of climate change.
  3. Increase sustainable and affordable access to clean energy to reduce deforestation, enhance social cohesion, and limit over-dependence on humanitarian subsidies.

The research program is expected to run until June 2026.
