UNHCR Global Trends Report 2024

More than ever, Sudan has become emblematic of today’s staggering human cost of conflict. According to UNHCR’s Global Trends 2024 report, the war that erupted in April 2023 has precipitated the world’s largest displacement crisis, yet it barely registers in global headlines.

Key Figures at a Glance

  • 14.3 million Sudanese were displaced by the end of 2024, which is nearly one in three of the entire population. This includes an increase of 3.5 million individuals in just 12 months.
  • Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) grew by 2.5 million (+28%) during 2024, primarily from Khartoum, Darfur and Al Jazirah.
  • Although new data for early 2025 shows a slight return movement, conditions in Darfur remain dire, especially after the April 2025 attack on Zamzam IDP Camp, which displaced over 406,000 people (81% of camp residents).
  • Refugees & asylum-seekers increased by 1 million in 2024 to reach 2.8 million Sudanese seeking safety abroad.
