Statement by the Regional Platform for Supporting Women-Led Organizations on escalating military operations in the city of El Obeid
The Regional Platform for Supporting Women-Led Organizations Responding to the Sudan Crisis expresses its deep concern over the escalating military operations in the city of El Obeid and warns of the risk of another humanitarian catastrophe similar to those witnessed in other Sudanese cities, as the conflict continues to expand, posing a direct threat to the lives of civilians.
The Platform reaffirms that the protection of civilians, compliance with international humanitarian law, and ensuring safe, sustained, and unhindered humanitarian access are urgent obligations that cannot be delayed. The continuation of military operations in densely populated civilian areas further exacerbates civilian suffering and deepens Sudan’s already severe humanitarian crisis.
The Platform calls on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities, protect civilians and civilian objects, and establish safe humanitarian corridors to ensure the timely and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance.
The Platform also calls upon the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States, the European Union, and all states and influential actors to take urgent and coordinated action to prevent further deterioration of the situation in El Obeid. This includes supporting an immediate humanitarian truce and strengthening efforts to protect civilians while ensuring the continued delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Protecting El Obeid today is a true test of the international community’s commitment to the protection of civilians. The Platform urges immediate and responsible action to prevent another humanitarian tragedy and to pave the way toward ending the war and restoring peace, security, and stability throughout Sudan.
About the Women Led Organizations (WLO) platform
Established in 2025 with the support of UNHCR and UN Women, the Regional WLO Support Platform brings together women-led organizations, women refugee-led organizations, and women's rights organizations across the region to strengthen collaboration, coordination, advocacy, and collective action in response to the Sudan crisis. Through a co-creation process led by member organizations, the Platform developed a shared vision and workplan aimed at advancing the rights, protection, and leadership of women and girls affected by the crisis.
